NHL DFS Picks for FanDuel and DraftKings – 3/23/17

Welcome to another edition of ResearchFantasy’s NHL Breakdown. These picks are what I consider to be the best play of the day, relative to their price. One of the most important things we must consider in daily fantasy is how many points a player gets per dollar. It helps us identify value plays to pair with studs that we know will produce in order to maximize our potential points in lineups. I also try to identify plays that can be used in either cash games or tournaments. Typically, when I build my cash games, I am looking for players that have the best floor combined with good upside. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let us know!

Prices listed are FantasyDraft/FanDuel/DraftKings

Paul Stastny (10300/5500/5000) – Let’s start things off tonight with the center for the top line of the St. Louis Blues. While he does have the DTD tag next to his name, the LBI he suffered is not considered serious and he is likely to suit up for this game. This is an elite matchup against the Canucks, and it never hurts to have cheap exposure to Vladimir Tarasenko, so he comes in high on my list tonight.

Anze Kopitar (10700/6400/5200) – Kopitar is someone I went with very heavily for about a week and a half straight during the Kings most recent home stand with great success. I’m going back to that well tonight. The Winnipeg Jets can be a competitive team, and ultimately, they let a lot of pucks into the net. Kopitar is priced affordably across all platforms, and should be able to get his in this home matchup.

Jonathan Toews (15100/7600/7200) – Toews has been very good as of late, and he’s another player I’ll have a ton of exposure to on this slate. If you’ve been reading these breakdowns for awhile, you’ll know that I love to target the Dallas Stars, and that is who Chicago faces off against tonight. I would look for this top line of the Blackhawks to come through yet again, and he makes a great starting point for your lineups.

Eric Staal (12600/5900/6100) – Staal is having a great season and it doesn’t look like it is going to slow down any time soon. His price is fine for what he brings to the table. He gets a sweet home matchup against a weak Philadelphia Flyers team. I think the top line should be able to come through with a few points tonight, making him an excellent target for both cash games and tournaments.

Wings –

Milan Lucic (9500/5400/4600) – Lucic’s production is picking up lately, which is a great thing, because his price hasn’t exactly been moving too much. The Oilers will be hitting the road to take on the Colorado Avalanche tonight, which is one of the best matchups one can get. I’m excited to use him tonight, and I think he’s going to go a little under owned and could make for a great tournament option.

Zach Hyman (7900/3400/4000) – Hyman is a hyper risky pick, but he could work out. Toronto is taking on the New Jersey Devils at home, and we all know about the road woes of this team. I think the top line, which Hyman skates on, could see solid chances at even strength, making him a punt option for tournaments.

Alex Chiasson (6100/3400/3100) – Chiasson is going to be one of my favorite low dollar options tonight. It never hurts to skate between guys like Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau. They fill out the second line for Calgary, who will be visiting Nashville. I love the Predators because their goalie play is laughable at best. This is going to be a good night for Calgary.

Jaromir Jagr (9600/4500/4700) – The winger position somehow ended up being the value portion of our article, which I am fine with. Jagr is going to see a terrific matchup against the Arizona Coyotes on his home ice. The price is too low for what he could end up with, so I’ll have a ton of exposure to him tonight.

Defensemen –

Brent Seabrook (9100/5000/4500) – I think it’s always easiest to just settle with Duncan Keith if you are looking at defensemen on Chicago, but I like Seabrook. Why? Price. I think the upside is likely higher, as is the floor, but I think you are also dealing with higher ownership. The matchup is terrific against the Stars, so he should see at least some of your lineups.

Torey Krug (10600/5700/5200) – The one fatal mistake I made on Tuesday night was fading Torey Krug when all my stats told me to do otherwise. Well, I’m not going to make the same mistake twice. The Lightning have no quality goalie play, so there will be ample opportunities to score, and even though he’s costly, I could see him coming through again tonight.

Aaron Ekblad (10900/5200/5300) – Ekblad is far too expensive for what he’s done this year – which is exactly why I am looking at him tonight. Arizona is a bad hockey club and with them being on the road tonight, I think it’s a great chance to risk using Ekblad. I would assume low ownership even in a plus matchup, which only strengthens my interest in him in tournaments.

Alex Pietrangelo (11700/5600/5700) – Pietrangelo is in a great place since Kevin Shattenkirk went to the Capitals. He’s now the one and only in St. Louis after a few years of sharing the spotlight with Shatt. Vancouver struggles in all facets of the game, so I think he should be a pretty good bet for some production tonight.

Goalies –

Chicago Goalie – Tuesday was one of those weird nights where all the “smart” goalie plays flopped. I wouldn’t expect that to happen again. Dallas is a team that is struggling right now, and it won’t help them being on the road against the Hawks tonight. I expect a bounce back performance here.

Toronto Goalie – I actually don’t mind using Frederik Andersen tonight in what I expect will be a victory for the Maple Leafs. I really think they should be able to take care of the Devils, and he’s been playing well, so I’m in on him tonight.
