NHL DFS Picks – 12/8/16

We are back with another NHL DFS Breakdown. For those who have asked, I am on a bit of a time crunch, so I am only covering NHL when there are more than four games. I appreciate the feedback that we’ve gotten recently. I think these picks do help out, at least some, but it is important to remember that no one is ever going to be right all the time, nor can we actually cause a player to player well even in a good matchup. Here are our favorite plays for your cash games and tournament lineups today.

Prices listed are FD/DK.

Aleksander Barkov (6500/5700) – Every time they are on the schedule, I say it makes me feel uneasy to put people against the Penguins. While they are improving, they are still having a tough time defensively. Barkov made our list on Tuesday and he did not disappoint, and I have no doubts about going back to the well on Thursday. He might be a better tournament option than cash play though.

Tyler Seguin (8400/7700) – Seguin has been really good aside from his most recent game, and even though Nashville has been mostly tough against the center position, I think I have no problem rolling with the talent level of Seguin here. I think he should pose some problems for Rinne and company and makes a nice tournament option.

Alexander Steen (6300/5700) – The next two plays make for interesting cash game options. The Islanders have been all kinds of bad this year, and I think the Blues are still one of the more potent offenses in the league. Steen is a cheap exposure to what should be some goal scoring tonight, and I love the idea of slotting him in at this price.

John Tavares (8000/7200) – Tavares is much pricier than Steen, but the matchup is actually just as appealing. He’s one of the best in the NHL still to this date, and a home matchup here with the Blues could work out well for him. I do like the upside here quite a bit, and even though he takes a big chunk of your budget, he should be well worth it.

Brad Marchand (7000/6600) – The wings are definitely my favorite plays of the day. It’s tough to choose which is my favorite, but we’ll touch on that in a second. Marchand and the Bruins are up against a traveling Colorado team that isn’t playing great, so there is definitely a major appeal there today. The price is right and I think I’ll have some shares of him tonight.

Troy Brouwer (4800/4400) – Brouwer isn’t a guy that you see mentioned too often, and truthfully he doesn’t have much upside, but if you need a guy around this price, Brouwer could work out well for you. The matchup is excellent here on the road against Arizona and I would definitely have no issues rolling him out tonight.

Nikita Kucherov (7800/7500) – If I had to pick one guy that would be my favorite player tonight, it would probably be Kucherov. He’s in an ideal situation at home against a bad, bad, bad Vancouver team and I want to have as many shares of him as I can. The price is up there, but he’s in prime position to produce tonight.

Jakub Voracek (7100/6800) – Voracek is another player who is in a very good position tonight to come through with a nice game, and is priced reasonably to boot. The Oilers aren’t exactly what we would call a tough defensive team, and these tough veterans of Philadelphia will be looking to take advantage of their shortcomings tonight. He makes for a very nice play.

Defensemen –

Alex Pietrangelo (5500/5500) – I like to pair one of my skaters with a defensemen in pretty much all of my cash game lineups, and tonight I like the idea of putting Pietrangelo with Steen. It’s always a tough choice between him and Shattenkirk, but I’ll roll with Pietrangelo specifically because of the price difference on FanDuel.

Victor Hedman (6700/5200) – Hedman is kind of priced out of things on FanDuel, but on DraftKings, he makes a very nice play. I like the upside he has here against the Vancouver Canucks, so he will make it into a lot of my lineups on DraftKings. I cannot say the same with FanDuel though as I could use the money elsewhere.

Dougie Hamilton (5400/5300) – I do feel bad that I don’t have many value options listed today, but I guess it is what it is. Much like with the St. Louis defensemen, I prefer using Hamilton here as he is a bit cheaper and basically has the same upside. I will gladly take the savings and throw him with Brouwer in some of my tournament lineups.

Shea Weber (6500/6900) – If the Devils struggle in one area, it is defending the defensemen position. Weber is one of the best in the game and I want to get him in as many lineups as I can. He will probably be more of a FanDuel play for me, as the salary on DraftKings is just way too difficult to work around.

Goalies –

Tampa Bay Goalie – Normally, I don’t do this, but the only goalie I have any interest in today is whoever is in the net for Tampa Bay. Vancouver is really bad, and the Lightning should be able to score on them at will, meaning a win is very likely to come from this game.
