NHL DFS Picks – 12/15/16

We are back with another NHL DFS Breakdown. Thursday will afford us a nice eight game slate, which is the best kind of slate for hockey, in my opinion. There are a number of good plays here, but there are enough options out there that lineups should be pretty different, which is always a good thing for both cash games and tournaments. These picks should help you fill in your lines for either formats tonight.

Prices listed are FD/DK.

Centers:

Jeff Carter (7300/6800) – Carter is red hot right now, and I’ll gladly scoop him up at this price with the Kings on the road against the Red Wings. Defense and goal tending are certainly lacking right now in the Motor City, and you should take advantage of it. Carter is a great way to get that exposure.

Aleksander Barkov (6600/6100) – Barkov is someone I always like to use, especially in cash games, and I think he’s in a good situation tonight as the Panthers go up against the Jets on the road. I would much prefer Florida to be the home team, but I think this is still a good situation for Barkov to be able to rattle off some more points tonight.

Kevin Hayes (5300/6000) – It’s always a good idea to use some players against the Dallas Stars, as they are having a tough time doing anything on the defensive end. Hayes probably isn’t on my radar in cash games, but in tournaments, he has enough upside at this price that he could certainly end up paying off.

Travis Zajac (5100/5500) – Zajac isn’t a guy you’ll see too often, but he has been at least decent as of late, and is in a good matchup against the Blues. While the Blues might be heavy favorites tonight, their goal tending situation has been a mess, and I think the Devils are talented enough to score a few goals.

Wings –

Vladimir Tarasenko (8600/7900) – Vlad is easily one of my favorite hockey players, and tonight he’s in a good matchup on home ice against the Devils. He’s one of the best goal scorers in the league, and even though he is very expensive, I could see him ending up with a huge night. He’s my top play of the night.

Patrik Laine (7300/7300) – Laine has been very, very good this year, and right now Florida is having a really tough time getting their legs underneath them. He’s a good bet for a handful of shots, and he carries pretty big upside. I don’t love him like I do Tarasenko, but I still do think he’s in an excellent position tonight.

Taylor Hall (7100/7000) – Taylor Hall has just been awesome this year, and I like the matchup for him here against the Blues. He’s putting up nice fantasy games regularly, and I think he’s a guy who I feel comfortable using in any and all of my lineups tonight.

Mitchell Marner (5500/6300) – I definitely want some exposure to Toronto tonight against the Coyotes, so I will jump on Marner. He’s priced nicely, but it makes sense because he hasn’t exactly been great or consistent as of late. I’ll only be using him in tournaments, but he makes a really nice option tonight.

Defensemen –

Alex Pietrangelo (5600/5600) – Apparently, I am really big into this Blues/Devils game tonight, as we have another member of the Blues making the list. Pietrangelo is priced very good for what his upside is in this contest. I think he should be a good bet to approach double digit fantasy points here and he could end up with even more than that.

Cam Fowler (5100/5400) – Boston hasn’t exactly been great this year, so I do expect them to give up some goals to the Ducks who are visiting them tonight. The price on Fowler is fair considering that he has been one of the more consistent defensemen this year, and I have no issues stacking him with someone else tonight either.

Nick Leddy (4700/4400) – Leddy is my favorite defensemen on the Islanders this year, but it can be a little difficult to figure out which one is going to have the big score each night. The Blackhawks aren’t doing very well at keeping other teams off the board, and I think that the Islanders will end up putting together a nice game that Leddy will play a part in.

Alec Martinez (4600/5000) – Martinez is another one of my favorite players, and with the team in a good matchup against the Red Wings tonight, I want to have as much exposure as I can. I typically only run two players stacks in cash games, but I might be willing to extend it to three players tonight with how I can see them playing.

Goalies –

Toronto Goalie – Arizona doesn’t travel very well, and even though the Maple Leafs are often a team we try to target, this might be a night to use their goalie. I don’t really love any options tonight, so this is just a playing the odds type of situation.

St. Louis Goalie – St. Louis has struggled with their goal tending a lot this year, but I am hoping they can hold it together tonight as the Devils come to town. I do prefer using goalies on home ice, and this is one of the better matchups for the home team, so the Blues goalie is in play tonight.
