NHL FanDuel & DraftKings DFS Picks – 1/19/17
Welcome to another edition of ResearchFantasy’s NHL Breakdown. These picks are what I consider to be the best play of the day, relative to their price. One of the most important things we must consider in daily fantasy is how many points a player gets per dollar. It helps us identify value plays to pair with studs that we know will produce in order to maximize our potential points in lineups. I also try to identify plays that can be used in either cash games or tournaments. Typically, when I build my cash games, I am looking for players that have the best floor combined with good upside. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let us know!
Prices listed are FD/DK.
Ryan Getzlaf (7400/6400) – Getzlaf will find himself in an excellent position tonight as the Anaheim Ducks take on the Colorado Avalanche on their home court. The price is really fair considering what he could end up doing in a matchup like this. I think he’s someone you want to look at in all formats tonight.
Evgeny Kuznestov (6500/5500) – St. Louis is playing really bad hockey defensively right now, and teams are scoring all over them. Kuz could definitely keep that trend alive tonight as Washington travels into St. Louis to visit the Blue. The price here is great, and he’ll have plenty of chances to score.
John Tavares (8200/6500) – It’s a pattern tonight that the better plays at the position seem to be a little more costly, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Dallas is always a team that seems to give up a ton of goals, and a guy like Tavares just makes too much sense. In fact, he’s probably my play of the day.
Tyler Bozak (5500/4900) – Bozak really disappointed the other night, but have no fear: he’s in another plus matchup tonight on home ice against the Rangers. I think he should find his way into some good shots, and could very well end up knocking one in, or at the very least, helping one in.
Melker Karlsson (3700/3100) – OK, after spending the vast majority of our purse on the center position, let’s try to save some face with our wings. Karlsson is not a prolific player, at least not Melker. He is getting time on the top line, though, so there is always the chance that he could end up being a part of the scoring. If he is, you’re getting exposure to goals at a cheap price.
Brian Boyle (4600/4000) – Boyle is in a much better position skating on the Lightning’s second line. The price might be a bit more, but at the same time, he has a good chance to be involved tonight. I think he’s a great option in both formats against a Sharks team that can give up some goals.
Charlie Coyle (6000/6000) – Coyle isn’t as cheap as the other options, but he is in just as good of a position. We know Arizona is one of our favorite teams to stack against, and this top line of the Wild should be a popular target in both formats tonight. I think he’s a great option that will make a ton of my lineups.
Pavel Buchnevich (4700/4200) – If there is one “lock” on the slate, or at least a super chalky play, it is going to have to be Buchnevich who has been awesome and is priced so low. He’s a free square in cash game play tonight, and I think he’ll make many of my tournament lineups as well.
Ryan McDonagh (5900/5300) – I think one of my top stacks tonight will be Buchnevich and McDonagh. There isn’t much to say about McDonagh, other than the fact that he has been really good this year, especially in recent weeks. This is a great matchup for him, so look for him to have a nice score.
Seth Jones (5200/5000) – Jones has another favorable matchup tonight, and as well has been very good this year. The price is right for what he brings to the table, and I think we’ll see him come through with a big game. Ottawa has been awful and should be one of your top targets tonight.
Anthony DeAngelo (3900/3800) – DeAngelo isn’t a name we typically see on our list, but I think this could be a good time to buy in. Minnesota seems to give up some big games to blue liners, and I think this could be a nice calculated risk. I can’t say I love it for cash games, but for tournaments, he’s in play.
Matt Niskanen (5000/4400) – Niskanen isn’t a common option, but tonight, I think he is worth a look against the Blues. With John Carlson highly doubtful to play, Niskanen is the defender I believe will benefit most, and I think he makes a great play in both formats.
Anaheim Goalie – Colorado is a team I don’t hesitate to target when they are on the road, and that is exactly where they find themselves tonight. The goalkeeper should end up with a pretty good shot at getting the win, so that’s why I am going here.
Columbus Goalie – Ottawa is another team that I think can be targetted against tonight. I think Columbus can end up having a big offensive night, which should give some security to their goalie. In cash games, I am looking mostly for the W, so that’s why they are here.
