NHL FanDuel & DraftKings DFS Picks – 1/13/17
Welcome to another edition of ResearchFantasy’s NHL Breakdown. These picks are what I consider to be the best play of the day, relative to their price. One of the most important things we must consider in daily fantasy is how many points a player gets per dollar. It helps us identify value plays to pair with studs that we know will produce in order to maximize our potential points in lineups. I also try to identify plays that can be used in either cash games or tournaments. Typically, when I build my cash games, I am looking for players that have the best floor combined with good upside. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let us know!
Prices listed are FD/DK.
Alexander Wennberg (6500/5700) – I don’t know what it is with me, but I really like using the Blue Jackets whenever they are in a good matchup, and I really like how they stack up against this Lightning team tonight. The upside is pretty big if they get going, because we’ve seen some games where they’ve just lit things up. He’s one of my favorites today.
Victor Rask (5800/5600) – I’m definitely all in tonight on the Rask/Skinner combination, as the Hurricanes attempt to stand strong on their home ice against the Buffalo Sabres. The upside is through the roof in this situation, and I could definitely see the combination combining for multiple points. Rask is priced way too cheap for this matchup.
Nicklas Backstrom (6800/6300) – Washington is another team I want to get a piece of tonight, as they’ve been playing pretty good hockey, and we’ve seen these Blackhawks give up some pretty big games this year. The price is definitely fair for what he could end up tonight, and I love the idea of stacking him and Ovechkin.
Bryan Little (5700/5400) – I’ve said it many times in these breakdowns that I do prefer using players against the Coyotes when they are on the road, but that doesn’t mean we are going to go out of our way to sit them just because the Coyotes are at home. The price is fair, and he’s been playing good hockey as of late.
Cam Atkinson (7200/7300) – Did I mention I love the Blue Jackets. Amongst my favorites of them is Cam Atkinson, who is just tremendous this year. I can certainly see him tearing the Lightning apart tonight, and I think the upside is absolutely crazy at this price.
Jonathan Marchessault (5600/5100) – I really would prefer Marchessault if he ends up skating on the top line tonight, but I can stomach him against the Islanders if he’s on the second line as well. He’s having a very good season, and he’s at the perfect price to run out in just about any format. I think he should see the score sheet tonight.
William Nylander (5800/5300) – I don’t see the Rangers shutting the visiting Maple Leafs down completely, so I think someone like Nylander will be worth using in some of your lineups. The price is very fair, and he’ll see time on the second line at even strength and I think there is a very good chance he’ll see top power play time.
Blake Wheeler (7000/6000) – Wheeler makes a great play to pair with Little tonight in what could very well end up being a high scoring affair with the Coyotes. He’s certainly going to cost a little more than Little, but he’s got a better floor and a better upside. He’s my top play of the night.
Ryan McDonagh (5700/5400) – Over the past few weeks, the Maple Leafs have been amongst the worst in the league against blue liners. McDonagh is a pretty steady play, and at this price, he’s an absolute steal. I could certainly see a multiple point game coming here, and he makes for a very nice play.
John Carlson (6200/6100) – Carlson is coming off a pretty big game the last time out, and he’s put into another favorable matchup tonight against the Blackhawks and their lack of defense. He is certainly pricey, but if he happens to pull off what he is capable of in this matchup, he’s going to take someone home a lot of money.
Seth Jones (5700/4900) – Well, I guess if you haven’t figured it out yet, I really like Columbus tonight. The defenders haven’t really been chipping in a lot lately, but they are more than capable of getting the job done. I will play much more of McDonagh at this price than Jones, but he still make a nice option.
Jacob Slavin (4300/4100) – Slavin is a little bit of a change up play here, as well as a lower priced option at the position, which I like to do when I can. He doesn’t have the upside that a lot of the other players on this list have, but he’s still very capable, and could definitely get it in on the scoring tonight.
Calgary Goalie – Yeah, I know it’s kind of a trendy thing to just go with the home team who is playing the Devils, and for cash games that is exactly what I will do. They haven’t burned me thus far this year, so I’m good with continuing the roll them out.
Carolina Goalie – Another trend for years in DFS has been to just play whoever plays the Sabres. While I do not think it is that easy anymore, I still think most of the tie it will be a worthwhile option to look at.
