CFL DFS Picks Week 9
Welcome to this edition of the CFL Daily Fantasy Breakdown!
Last week was certainly an exciting week of football, and this one looks to be pretty good as well. My favorite targets last week, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, are off this week, so my favorite cheap plays are gone, and not likely to be the same price when they return.
This article will largely be based off the projections available on this site. It is important to note that it will take these projections a few weeks to smooth out. I will go through each position in this article and highlight a few plays I like, and then some others I would stay away from, despite what the projections say. The CFL is a bit of an anomaly at this point, and I don’t think it is fair to use last year’s statistics as a basis for this year. With that said, if you like what you see let us know on Twitter @researchandwin or on Facebook at Research Fantasy. Also, check out our CFL Research Portal. It is very useful in making fantasy decisions.
Zach Collaros ($10,100) – Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Saskatchewan Rough Riders
Callaros made his long awaited debut last week against the Lions, and comes back this week with an excellent matchup against the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. Thus far on the year, the Rough Riders haven’t exactly been able to defend the passing game, which makes Callaros an attractive option. One of the best in the CFL when healthy, Collaros is priced too low tonight at $10,100, making him the fourth highest priced quarterback on the slate. I’ll gladly take the discount over the other players and I think Collaros has a good shot at being the highest scoring quarterback this week.
Jonathan Jennings ($9,500) – BC Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders
Jennings is a guy who doesn’t need to be played based on matchup. He’s had some good games against pretty decent defenders. This week, he’ll get a Stampeders team that he already put over 37 points up on. Their defense is good, and so is their offense, which means we will likely need to see more passing to get the job done. I don’t love him in cash games, but I very much do like how this lines up for him this week in tournaments.
Brandon Whitaker ($6,500) – Toronto Argonauts vs. Edmonton Eskimos
Typically, I like to use quarterbacks and wide receivers against the Eskimos, but I think Whitaker is well worth his price tonight. There are a few things I look at. First, he has gotten at least double digit rushing attempts in five of his last six games. He has also caught the ball a handful of time in each. Touches mean everything in fantasy sports, because any amount of production can happen. All it takes is for a receiver to make the right block, and a guy can turn a 5 yard churn into a 50 yard touchdown. The Eskimos defense overall isn’t great, and their offense will likely put them on the field a lot this week. Whitaker is my top play at the position.
Jeremiah Johnson ($6,600) – BC Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders
Johnson has been absolutely amazing over the last two weeks, and his price isn’t even close to catching up to his production. It typically isn’t a great idea to use two running backs, but honestly, it is a strategy I have been using that doesn’t work too bad. The matchup is about league average for Johnson, but he is clearly above the league average running back. I’ll take the small discount on him tonight and load up on him in my lineups.
Diontae Spencer ($7,800) – Toronto Argonauts vs. Edmonton Eskimos
Remember how I said I like to attack Edmonton through the air? Well, here we are. Spencer only has one game under his belt, so I don’t want to overreact too badly, but I think everything lines up well for him here. For one, the Argos are dealing with several injuries to their receiving unit, which opens up more opportunity for Spencer. He should still be the top receiving option on this team, and his price is far too low for someone who is the number one receiver on their team.
Derel Walker ($10,700) – Edmonton Eskimos @ Toronto Argonauts
Week in and week out, both Walker and Adarius Bowman are in play. This Eskimos team is one of the most potent offenses in all of the CFL. I can’t really blame you no matter which one you choose. In fact, I will often run lineups, cash and tournament, with both Walker and Bowman, and it typically works out. I expect this to be a closely contested game, and I think we will see lots of fantasy points scored on both sides. You are paying for safety with Walker.
Emmanuel Arceneaux ($8,500) – BC Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders
Jonathan Jennings and Emmanuel Arceneaux are beginning to really come together, and it is resulting in some pretty big fantasy performances between the two. While Arceneaux isn’t racking up large amount of receptions, he is absolutely putting together big fantasy outings due to a high yard per catch. He is also scoring touchdowns. The matchup isn’t really bad or good, but I will definitely side with the Lions are their strong play recently.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats ($4,700) – vs. Saskatchewan Rough Riders
The Rough Riders do have some potent pieces to their offense, but overall, I think the Tiger-Cats defense have an edge here. I love their price, as it is right in the middle of all the defenses. Calgary does come in with our top overall projection this week, but I do think the Lions can score some points and I don’t want any piece of that. I’m rolling with the Cats this week.
